Up in the Berkshires: Cicely Tyson and Charles Brown are featured in the workshop of Cheryl West’s two-character play “Birdie Blue” at the smaller Nikos Theatre at Williamstown Theatre Festival. Among a long list of his shows were: “A Member of the Wedding,” “The Visit,” “A Man for All Seasons,” “Bus Stop,” “Orpheus Descending,” “A Hole in the Head,” “A Touch of the Poet,” “Separate Tables,” “No Man’s Land,” “Betrayal,” “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” “Medea” and two shows with Katharine Hepburn, “A Matter of Gravity” and ” The West Side Waltz.” His long association with playwright Arthur Miller included productions of “After the Fall,” “The Price,” “The Creation of the World and Other Business,” a revival of “Death of a Salesman” with Dustin Hoffman, and “Broken Glass,” which had its world premiere at Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven. Whitehead, who leaves his wife, actress Zoe Caldwell, was a distinguished producer who began his career in the ’50s. Producer Robert Whitehead died Saturday at his home in Pound Ridge, N.Y. There will also be two series of play readings Friday through Sunday and July 26 to 28. Featured are Maria Tucci, Laurie Kennedy and John DeVries. (Michael Rupert, James Barbour, Alec Mapa and Liz Larcen star in the tongue-in-cheek film noir spoof.) “Left,” a new play written and directed by Richard Nelson, plays July 24 to Aug. This is followed by a new musical, “Adrift in Macao,” with book and lyrics by Christopher Durang and music by Peter Melnick, directed by Sheryl Kaller, which plays July 10 to 20. On the main stage of the series, “Tuesdays With Morrie” by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom, directed by David Esbjornson, plays Friday through July 6. The new play will be presented at the Shiva Theatre June 28 to 30, followed by Arthur Kopit’s “Discovery of America” July 5 to 7 Elizabeth Swados’ “The Violence Project” July 19 to 21 and Edwin Sanchez’ “Diosa” (which will be at Hartford Stage next spring) Aug. Michael Wilson, artistic director of Hartford Stage, directs the new untitled Tom Donaghy play at New York Stage & Film theater series at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
